Tamil Nadu Assembly Adopts Resolution to Freeze Lok Sabha Seats at 543

The Tamil Nadu Assembly approved a resolution aimed at freezing the number of Lok Sabha seats at 543. Chief Minister Vijay initiated this resolution as a means to ensure equitable political representation for southern states, countering concerns that past population control successes might lead to diminished parliamentary voice.

On August 8, Vijay convened a meeting with Members of Parliament from Tamil Nadu at Kalaivanar Arangam in Chennai to discuss the ongoing delimitation issues. This resolution emerged from those discussions, reflecting a consolidation of support among certain political factions.

The resolution further calls for the immediate implementation of a 33 percent reservation for women within the existing Lok Sabha framework, reinforcing commitments to gender representation in governmental structures.

While the ruling parties expressed support for the resolution, it faced opposition from several groups including the AIADMK, PMK, DMDK, and BJP, highlighting a divided political landscape within the assembly.

This initiative arrives shortly after the Tamil Nadu government took a stance against the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) with a separate bill, indicating a trend of assertive legislative actions by the state administration under Vijay's leadership.
