Turkish Parliament passes law for the reintegration of former PKK fighters

On Monday evening, the Turkish Parliament passed a law officially titled "Law on Strengthening National Solidarity and Social Integration." This law includes provisions for the reintegration of former fighters from the banned Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK).

The adoption of the law was seen as a significant step in the so-called peace process initiated two years ago. The law aims to facilitate the transition back to civilian life for PKK fighters who are willing to lay down their arms.

The parliamentary vote showed a large majority: 468 members voted in favor of the law, while 88 were against. Reports indicate, however, that there are conditions under which this return will be possible.

The new law also includes measures to prevent the prosecution of former fighters. They are to be protected from legal consequences to improve their social reintegration opportunities.

Although the law facilitates the return of many former members, no general amnesty has been declared, meaning individual cases will still need to be handled separately. The legal framework is set to come into effect only when the PKK is fully disarmed and its dissolution is confirmed.
