Protests in Jharkhand Over Exam Irregularities Escalate as Police Intervene

Thousands of youth protesters took to the streets in Jharkhand, India, on Monday, aiming to march on the state legislature to protest alleged irregularities in civil service examinations. Reports indicated that police responded with tear gas, batons, and water cannons to disperse the crowd. This protest is part of a series of demonstrations initiated late last month over grievances regarding recruitment test paper leaks and other allegations of wrongdoing in the hiring process.

The demonstrations saw active participation from students and unemployed individuals, particularly in Ranchi, the state capital, where calls for justice have been vocal. Students have expressed their determination to continue the protests, which include an indefinite fast, despite concerns about their health, as indicated by various sources.

In light of the ongoing situation, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge expressed support for the students, emphasizing the importance of addressing their interests. Meanwhile, discussions between student representatives and the Jharkhand government have reached six rounds, but these talks have not led to a resolution of the impasse concerning the demands for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe.

Further developments included the Jharkhand government canceling the examination conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) amid the rising tensions. Students have stated they will continue protests until a CBI investigation is authorized, amplifying their calls for transparency and accountability in the recruitment process.

Three members of the JPSC resigned in the wake of increased scrutiny and impending questioning by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). This has added to the frustrations of the protestors, who are also pushing for the annulment of the JSSC-CGL 2024 exam, reflecting their broader concerns over recruitment practices.

As tensions escalate between state authorities and demonstrators, police presence has intensified near the assembly. Prohibitive orders have been implemented in an effort to maintain public order during the protests, indicating the seriousness of the ongoing situation. Despite these measures, the students remain resolute in their aim to voice their demands unequivocally.
