Health officials in Louisiana are advising beachgoers to exercise caution due to a rise in infections from the flesh-eating bacterium Vibrio vulnificus. The state’s health department reported that there have been nine confirmed cases of these infections this year, which resulted in hospitalization for all affected individuals.

According to the health department, five of the nine patients have died as a result of their infections. The bacterium is known to thrive in warm seawater, making summer a critical time for alerts and precautions.

Vibrio vulnificus infections can occur through open wounds or when contaminated seafood is consumed. Health officials emphasize the importance of awareness and prevention methods for those engaging in recreational activities near coastal waters.

The state has issued recommendations including avoiding swimming with open wounds, ensuring proper seafood handling, and seeking medical attention immediately for infected wounds or severe symptoms.

During the same period last year, Louisiana saw an increase in such infections, prompting the state health officials to be vigilant in monitoring cases this summer.

The surge in cases has become a focal point for health advisories, as local officials work to mitigate risks to beachgoers and ensure public safety.
