Industry cuts production due to low water levels in the Rhine

The ongoing low water levels in the Rhine are forcing some companies in Germany to reduce their production capacities. Thomas Puls, a transportation expert at the Institute of the German Economy (IW), stated that the lowest water levels south of the city of Kaub could lead to a complete cutoff of transport routes. Since the existing infrastructure cannot provide alternatives via road or rail, the reduction of production in the basic materials industry is the most likely response.

The impact on industry is already being felt, as the transport situation significantly hampers the ability to move goods. Companies are therefore forced to adjust their production processes to accommodate the changing conditions.
