Hackers Breach Polish Energy Plant Using Private Network

Last year, hackers breached a combined heat and power plant in Poland that provides heat to approximately 50,000 residents, according to reports. The attackers utilized a private Access Point Name (APN) to gain entry to the Operational Technology (OT) network associated with the facility.

During the breach, the intruders managed to shut down a steam turbine and the process-water treatment system, as stated by The Hacker News. The attack occurred over the private cellular network used by the local grid operator to communicate with remote equipment.

Recovery efforts commenced around 7:30 a.m. despite the presence of the intruders in the network. Importantly, residents did not experience any loss of heat during this incident as restoration efforts progressed.
