Chilean government decides to reinvest Codelco's profits in 2025

President José Antonio Kast's government allows Codelco to capitalize its 2025 profits, setting a precedent for the state-owned company.

The government of President José Antonio Kast has decided that, for the first time in over 50 years, Codelco will not withdraw the profits corresponding to the year 2025. Instead, the earnings generated during that period will be reinvested in the same company. This measure was announced on Monday, October 10, by the Chilean administration and represents a significant shift in fiscal policy regarding the state-owned miner.

Codelco's profits for 2025 amount to a total of $2.422 billion. However, this figure includes an accounting recognition of $2.006 billion from Novandino Litio, a partnership between Codelco and SQM. The decision to capitalize 100% of these profits aims to improve the company's financial situation, which faces ongoing economic challenges.

According to some experts, this decision improves the debt-to-equity ratio of Codelco, although it does not directly increase the available capital of the mining company. Analyst Fontaine mentioned that "the most important thing is the signal" sent to the market regarding the company's solidity amid the financial crisis.

Codelco is recognized as one of the largest copper producers in the world. The Chilean government's decision seeks not only to strengthen the company but also to address its financial situation in a context of high economic volatility in the mining sector.

This unusual measure has been analyzed by various market actors, who observe that Codelco's retention of its profits could impact its ability to meet future demands and tackle necessary investments.

The approval of this reinvestment comes at a time when strategic decisions that aim to ensure Codelco's long-term viability are increasingly valued, a crucial aspect for the economic development of Chile. The future of the state-owned company is at the center of debate in the country.
